Forklift Cleanliness

Studies have found that many forklift breakdowns might well have been prevented had those lift trucks been serviced, maintained, and cleaned more frequently. From experience, many of us in material handling have found that forklift cleanliness is one the best habits to get into.

A few forklift cleanliness considerations are,Having a forklift preventative maintenance program in place is essential, though, but it does not relieve you of the day to day responsibility of keeping your lift trucks well scrubbed. Along with a PM program and this day to day up keep, its important as well to see to it that all lift truck operators are current with the latest safety procedures. Armed with this knowledge, forklift drivers will become more aware of the importance of operating a clean piece of equipment.

For those operating outdoors

For lift trucks that do their jobs in rough terrain, it’s really not possible to keep the area of operation truly clean, but it is possible to make sure that the forklifts themselves are washed down and the dirt and mud removed before sending them out for their next shift.

 For those operating indoors

On the other hand, it should be seen to that indoor forklifts perform their tasks in a relatively clean environment and that they are wiped down regularly. The removal of lint, oil and grease will certainly prevent potential engine fires from happening. In addition, warehouse and distribution center floors should be kept clear of scrap paper that can also be a fire hazard.

Some other considerations, too

It has been estimated that clean and well maintained forklift batteries have double the life span of those that are used and abused. Many material handlers who run a large fleet of powered industrial trucks have found value the special super-size automated forklift battery washers. These larger washers are able contain the toxins that the hand washing cannot and are therefore much more eco-friendly.

And one more thing

IC engines run on heat, but at some point you have to ask yourself how hot is too hot? You can reach that point pretty fast with a dirty radiator, so keep them clean inside and out.

Conclusion

We think forklift cleanliness will pay you dividends in the long run.
